How Video Conferencing is Reshaping the Workforce for Everyone
According to industry analysts, video conferencing is on the rise. Several factors are fueling the growth, including a growing remote workforce. According to the latest US Census data, 5.2 percent of workers in the US – or 8 million people – worked at home in 2017. This is up from 5 percent in 2016 and 3.3 percent in 2000. And in the UK, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) reports that remote work has increased by nearly a quarter of a million over the last decade, with expectations that half of the UK workforce will be working remotely by 2020.
The millennial workforce has also played a part in expanding video usage. West studied the video conferencing habits of 230 professionals across the US and found workers aged 18-34 are indeed more likely to use video than their Gen X and Baby Boomer counterparts.
There are studies that indicate video conferencing has a direct impact on the success of meetings as well:
- 73 percent of workers admit to being more attentive and engaged in video conference calls than audio-only calls, and 82 percent make an effort to prepare more for video calls. (West)
- 94 percent of companies surveyed say increased efficiency and productivity is the top benefit of video conferencing. (Polycom)
As video conferencing tools have shifted from expensive and cumbersome to use to simple and agile, users are embracing video more than ever.
